Natural stone patio and path running alongside a lawn

Landscaping, from bare earth to finished garden

Some jobs are a single patio. Others are a garden that needs taking back to nothing and starting again. Because we do the paving, brickwork, fencing and turf ourselves, a whole garden can be planned and built by one team, in the right order, without you chasing three different trades.

What a full garden job can include

  • Clearing and levelling. Old patios, overgrown beds, sheds and rubble taken out, and the ground levelled or terraced.
  • Drainage. Sorting out lawns that hold water and patios that puddle, before anything new goes down.
  • Patios and paths. Porcelain, natural stone or concrete slabs on a full mortar bed. More on our patios page.
  • Walls and raised beds. Brick walls, piers and planters, or timber sleeper beds.
  • Fencing. New boundaries on concrete posts with gravel boards, or decorative panels and trellis.
  • Lawns. Fresh turf laid on prepared ground, or artificial grass if you'd rather never mow again.
  • Gravel and borders. Decorative gravel, slate chippings, edging and beds left ready for planting.

Case study: garden transformation, Stafford

A new-build garden handed over with no turf and uneven, weedy ground. We took it back to a level base and turned it into a porcelain patio, a block-paved border and an artificial lawn. The job ran from late December to late January.

The finished garden, from upstairs

What we did

  • Dug out and levelled the whole garden with a mini digger, and took the spoil away.
  • Built a compacted stone sub-base so nothing sinks or rocks later.
  • Laid a porcelain patio right round the garden on a full mortar bed.
  • Framed the centre with a block-paved border, which also gives the grass a solid edge.
  • Laid artificial grass in the middle on a prepared, free-draining base.

Craig and Dylan transformed my garden after I moved into a new build with no turf and an uneven garden. They dug out and levelled the area, laid porcelain tiles and artificial grass, and finished everything off with the borders. They worked quickly and efficiently, were upfront about the costs and scope of the job, and delivered exactly what was agreed. I’m really pleased with the result and would thoroughly recommend them!

Why one team makes a difference

When a garden is done by several different trades, each one works around whatever the last one left. The fence concrete ends up where the patio needs to go, the new paving gets churned up when the turf goes down, and nobody owns the levels.

We plan the whole garden up front, then build it in the order that makes sense: groundwork and drainage first, then walls and fencing, then hard surfaces, then turf and the finishing touches. One price, one timescale, and one of two numbers to ring.

Turfing and lawns

New turf only does well if the ground under it is right. We dig over or rotavate, pick out stones and roots, bring in topsoil where it's needed, level and firm it, then lay the turf with staggered joints so it knits together.

Turf can go down for most of the year, but spring and autumn are easiest because the ground is moist and it isn't too hot. In summer it needs a lot of watering for the first couple of weeks. We'll tell you exactly how to look after it when we finish.

Planning a garden with us

You don't need a drawing. Most people start with a rough idea, a few photos they like and a list of what the garden needs to do: somewhere to sit in the evening sun, a lawn for the kids, less upkeep, more parking. We'll come out, look at the space, talk through what will actually work and what it costs, and give you a free quote.

If the budget doesn't stretch to everything at once, we can split the work into stages, with each part built to fit the next.

Landscaping: your questions

How long does a full garden take?

It depends on the size and what's going in. A typical back garden makeover is usually somewhere between one and three weeks. We'll give you a realistic timescale with the quote.

Do you take the waste away?

Yes. Muck away is part of the job.

Can you work from a design I already have?

Of course. If you've had a garden designed, or sketched out what you want, we'll price it as drawn and tell you if anything needs adjusting for the levels or drainage.

What if everything has to come through the house?

Some gardens have no side access. If that's the case we'll talk it through before we start, plan how materials and waste get in and out, and protect the route through the house.
